Shell Buildings Program Provides Available Space in Rural Virginia

Rural Virginia is a hotspot for locating industry—and communities there are well prepared for growth. One of the latest economic development initiatives is a statewide program to fund shell buildings.

These ready-for-business facilities are a definite asset for locating companies because they are positioned in communities that are eager to attract industry, offer high labor availability and also are the most conducive to industry success. In addition, shell buildings can facilitate a faster start-up by reducing the time necessary for site development.

“In 1999, three rural communities were awarded shell buildings through this competitive building program,” said Jill Lawrence, a manager for Virginia Economic Development Partnership. “Historically, these buildings have increased prospect flow tremendously and are usually the first tool communities use to develop relationships with potentially locating corporations.”
